Gassy Foods to Avoid While Breastfeeding

It is normal for your baby to experience gas, no matter what you eat. For the most part, there’s no need to be worried when your baby passes gas because it is completely normal, but in some situations it may be something in your diet. "It's possible that some of the gas-inducing foods that Mom ingests can also affect her baby," says Jennifer Shu, M.D., an Atlanta-based pediatrician and coauthor of Food Fights: Winning The Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed with Insight, Humor, and A Bottle of Ketchup.

f your baby is experiencing gas and seems to be very uncomfortable, it might be a good idea to stay away from certain foods and see if your baby ends up feeling better. Here are some foods that may cause gas when breastfeeding!

Breastfeeding foods that cause gas:

  • Some Fruits, especially: prunes, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, citrus fruits
  • Dairy Products
  • Green Vegetables: broccoli, brussel sprouts, artichokes, asparagus
  • Starch Products: corn, pasta, potatoes

This list has many foods on it, but that does not mean you should completely cut all of these foods out of your diet. If you have eaten some of these foods in the last 72 hours and your baby seems to be more gassy than usual, it might be a good idea to cut one or two of these foods  out of your diet for a week or so and see if your baby improves. If you still cannot figure out why your baby is experiencing a lot of gas then you might want to visit a lactation consultant. They will be able to help you figure out what might be going on.
